As promised, today I’m going to follow up on my Monday and Wednesday blog posts on pricing. My biggest problem with pricing always comes down to the fact that I treat every wedding and special event I do as if it were my own. When I meet with one of my new brides, for example, she shares her wedding vision with me, and I immediately get excited. After all, I love what I do! I can’t wait to start designing, and all I want is for my bride to have it all.
In other words, every new job is like my baby. And as artist, I have a strong sense of what my bride’s wedding should look and feel like, and nothing gives me more pleasure than bringing every last detail to life.
I think every wedding and event vendor faces this issue in their own way. Caterers want to create the most beautiful and delicious meals possible. Photographers and videographers want to capture a stunning record of a couple’s wedding day, images to be treasured for generations to come.
Unfortunately, we can’t create these works of art for free. However, as an artist, I often find that I’m too close to the event to deal with practical issues like money. That’s why I never discuss money with my brides and other clients directly. And this is my advice to all of you:
Remember, you are an artist who is passionate about your art. Your focus should be on your work. Have someone else discuss pricing with your clients. That person can be anyone who is not emotionally involved in seeing your creation come to life.
