I live in my own world of design fantasy, and I’m under the impression that most designers as well as clients want their event to be jaw-dropping dramatic. However, I frequently travel around the world giving speeches, and, lately, I’ve been meeting a lot of very frustrated designers. They complain to me that their clients don’t want anything too different, preferring instead the classic simple yet elegant look. From my perspective (and with my over the top sensibility), I still think an event can be both elegant and dramatic. Nonetheless, I understand the frustration other designers are feeling.
Let’s take a poll. What are your clients asking for?
1. They want what’s expected: Pretty, safe, and simple. They often use the word “elegant.”
2. They want to see something that’s completely new and different.
3. They want a very dramatic and over-the-top design.
Secondly, and even more importantly, as a designer, what type of designs do you prefer?
Every day this week as I’ll be exploring the pluses and the minuses of each of the above. So, be sure to check back! In the meantime, please share your own thoughts in the comments.
