One of the most amazing things about being an artist is the “blank slate” we wake up with each day. Whether a florist, a designer, a painter, a writer, a musician or any other creative soul, there is always something new to create. For me, that creation is not only a design, but an experience.
I have always had a passion for the idea of transformation. I love the idea of changing a room into something else and making guests feel as though they have left all traces of the reality they knew before walking through the door behind them. This is one of the key elements in the work I do for my clients as well as in the classes I hold for my Protege students.
When I suggest to think outside of the vase, I am not only speaking about designs that are literally outside of the vase (though I love to work on those), I am suggesting that we think beyond what we all know works and try something new. That can be something large like a dance floor made of flowers over a pool or simply taking a different approach inside of the vase. It’s about seeing what is still possible and not what we have proved has been.
Today, I want to ask all of you to think of a design you loved to create and think of a way you have made it just a little more unusual. Again, it doesn’t have to be a big change. Sometimes the biggest impact are in the smallest details.
How often do you go back and rethink your designs? Not in a way that suggests you did anything wrong, but in one that inspires you to be different?
