My Opinion: If It Ain’t Broke, You May Still Need To Fix It

Dear Readers:

I hope you’re all having a great start of the week and finding it to be productive. I also hope that you are planning a little room to move outside of your comfort zone and try something new before Friday comes around. I come to you with this challenge after overhearing an interesting conversation this weekend.

Two very well known event designers were having a discussion when one mentioned a new design idea to the other. The one listening made a mock scoff and said, “if it’s not broke, why fix it?” I knew he was joking, but I also thought about the dangers of resting on your laurels. Even if what you do never goes out of fashion, you run the risk of running stale as a designer or worse, burned out! How can a creative person find any passion and inspiration doing the same thing day in and out?

It is my opinion that we may not need to “fix” something, but we can certainly work to grow and build upon it. There is no progress without a fresh perspective and an innovative approach. Today, I want to ask all of you how you feel about this “do what works” mentality? Are you always trying to push forward or are you more of the “if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it” ideology?
