My Opinion: Being Innovative Is More Important Than Being Trendy

Dear Readers:

We work in a vibrant and competitive industry full of vision and plenty of feedback. One of the things I have learned in my 36 years in this business is that, in order to be successful, you must stand out. In order to stand out, you must always be different. I am often asked to comment on trends and I always explain that I don’t follow them (which, I will admit, always gets a bit of a look). I am not saying this out of ego or to be obnoxious. I am, of course, aware of what is popular with brides and also pay attention to what is happening in weddings, events,  fashion and art, but I have always felt that when something becomes very popular, it’s time to introduce something else.

The whole existence of trends depends on change, so why not be the change? Why not work every single day to be an innovator instead of a follower? Yes, it is much harder (and more frustrating when you feel you have hit a block) but as Coco Chanel once said, In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.”

Today, I really want to encourage all of you to push yourself out of whatever box you might be in. Really challenge yourself to be innovative as well as creative. Look up local exhibitions and go and see something you normally would not care to see. Pop into a new restaurant to try a cuisine you know nothing about or buy a book in a genre you have never read. The amazing thing about being an artist is that inspiration is all around us if we open our eyes and look for it. That doesn’t happen when we simply follow the footsteps in front of us (and that includes those left by us on a path we have already walked down).

Tell me the most innovative thing you have done recently.
