My Inspiring Trip to Jakarta

Preston Bailey and Biyan Indonesian Clothing Designer

What a week! I’ve been in Jakarta the last several days having the time of my life. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia. It’s also the tenth largest city in the entire world. But when you’re in the middle of it, it might as well be the biggest city in the entire universe! Someone told me that the city’s nickname is Big Durian. A durian is a large Southeast Asian fruit that tastes delicious but smells rotten. And that’s pretty much the perfect way to describe Jakarta!

Travel is very important to me, because I discover so many new ideas and fresh inspirations when I’m far away from home. I also get to meet incredible people like designer Biyan Wanaatmadja, whose friendship and one-of-a-kind designs never cease to amaze me. On this trip, I got to attend Biyan’s latest runway show, which I think may have been his best ever — And that’s really saying something because he’s been designing for twenty-seven years! (That’s a photo of us above. It was taken right after the show.)

I also did a book signing for my new book Flowers, and while I love all my fans equally, the lovely folks who attended were some of the friendliest fans I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. They sure set the bar for the rest of my book signings to come!

Oh and I also caught a glimpse of a wonderful Indonesian wedding tradition. Guests hang elaborate flower signs full of happy wedding wishes outside the ceremony. When the bride and groom arrive, they’re greeted by these beautiful floral signs. I wish we did that in the U.S.! Here’s a photo I took of the signs. Aren’t they pretty? I love all the different colors!
