As I reflect on this past week in China, I cannot help but to think about all of the wonderful things we all can learn from one another. It’s always humbling to see how this industry transcends all types of boundaries, languages, distances, and cultures. I realized how fortunate we are to be able to use our knowledge to influence the outcome of a situation. That said, today, more than ever, I am able to appreciate the fact that knowledge is no good unless it’s used for a better purpose.
Sharing stories and life experiences with some old and new friends in China inspired me to share my thoughts on the importance of this subject with you. It’s incredible how interactions with others leave a lasting memory. I’ve always known this, but this week, more than ever, I understood the importance of combining knowledge with grace and gratitude in order to stay humble. That last part is so important as humility nurtures curiosity, which further nurtures education and the relationships with those who you can teach and teach you something.
“If there is one thing that I’ve learned, it’s that people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.” It’s imperative that we understand this. Knowing is not enough. Knowing how to share what you know is an essential component to success. Few people enjoy being talked at or spoken down to, and when we sit down with others at a table, isn’t it exciting to think about all of the wonderful information that can be exchanged, instead of feeling we must compete with one another to know more than those around us?
It’s my hope that as we continue to grow and interact with our clients and other industry friends, and even family, that this phrase dictates our interactions. The moral of the story is whether you are pitching to a client, making new friends, or simply interacting with your coworkers, make this a priority in your life. You have nothing to loose by doing so and everything to gain.
With a Happy Heart,
