It’s hard not to go to a place of despair when your business slows down. We are in an industry that’s mostly considered a luxury, so it’s likely that in these difficult economical times we are going to feel the pinch first. The key is to start thinking, in a very practical way, how you can hold on for the next two years. Always keep in mind that you are not alone in this effort.
Here are a few suggestions for things to do, if you are having a bit of a slump:
- Keep a positive mindset. You are going to survive, never doubt that. Even if you have to downsize, quitting should never be an option. I have lived through more than one recession, and even if it feels like the sky is falling, just hang in there.
- Work on getting clients in new ways. You need to become multi-service oriented. With every single client you encounter, make sure you can offer them more than one service. This helps to attract new business or bring back repeat clients. This can be tricky, though, especially with pricing.
- Work on your artistry. This is a great time to work on coming up with new ideas for design or service. Always keep in mind that your originality is what can give you that extra edge.
- Contact past clients. Make sure you keep the discipline of contacting your clients with a phone call or email, with a note saying that you appreciated working for them and please have you in mind if anything comes up.
- Organize your portfolio of images. This is important because you get to review your own work. It’s also a way to kindle that flame of inspiration, or learn how you can do things better for next time.
Regardless of what kind of business you’re in, it’s unrealistic to think there will only be good years. As in life, we have our great moments and our not so great moments.
A great way to survive those not so great moments is by learning from them.
