Designing With Flowers: A Florist Is Snooping On My Work

Dear Preston:

I am one of the two largest florists in my town. My competitor and I were bidding for a job and I was lucky enough to get it. While installing the flowers, I caught the other florist snooping on my work!  I was both appalled and angry and asked him to leave immediately.  I am still very upset and feel like sending him an angry email to give him a piece of my mind.  What do you suggest I do?

Dear D:

I know exactly how you feel. Years ago, I used to have a stupid policy forbidding anyone to visit my job site during set up (including other florists).  That ended when it dawned on me that I was going about it in the wrong way.  I could be insecure about people snooping or I could be open and take their interest as a compliment.  Disrespected, I understand where you are coming from, but who cares if he snoops?  You got the job and you are clearly doing something right.  Besides, if it weren’t the florist, I am sure that he would have been able to see your work as someone would have likely taken photos and posted them somewhere; this is the world we live in, and it’s OK to embrace it and be confident in our skills without worrying someone might see, copy and/or comment on it.

Do not waist your precious energy on this kind of bad blood. Just continue to do beautiful work and know that you have my full support.
