I want to first say that I was very touched by your honesty in yesterday’s blog. I am also dealing with a very disturbing situation. A client came to me and said that she wanted to hire me for her daughter’s wedding. My potential client had a design proposal from another company and said that she fired them due to her dislike of the owner. She has asked me to execute the designs (exactly) as she “loves” them. Preston, this is the biggest job opportunity I have had all year and I could really use the money. What do you think I should do?
This is exactly what my blog was about yesterday. My first reaction is to tell this client to get lost as it is time to stop giving into clients and vendors who are keen to steal our ideas. That said, I understand your position. You need this job. I applaud you for even asking. Here is what I suggest you do:
Call the company that was fired and see if there is more to this story (I am sure there is). Perhaps you could even be honest with them and tell them your situation and that you truly need this job and offer to buy their design. Treat this company owner with respect (as a colleague and not a competitor) and see what you can work out. That said, I would be very careful with this client if I were you. She had no problem firing a company after wasting their time and essentially stealing their design.
Question: This is a very difficult place to be in. If you were in this situation, what would you do? Would you do this job?
