I am a planner in California. I want to first say that I love what I do so much and I love that I get to do it for a living, but I am so over the drama and gossip in the industry in my community. It’s like a reality show with planners and florists badmouthing one another and constantly stirring the pot. I feel like I am in high school! How do you deal with this mess?
Dear Over It:
I am sorry you’re dealing with this drama, but that is your first mistake: you’re making it something for you to have to deal with. We live in a very gossipy world full of those who court attention and others who can’t wait to be courted. Some are just waiting to say something vile whilst others are there to cheer and others come just to read/listen to the comments. Look on any celebrity Instagram account and you’ll find that many have reasons not to get out of bed in the morning.
Over it, my suggestion to you is to, well, get over it (and I say that in the best possible way). Look ahead, look up, move past it and let go of it. You are doing what you love for a living for people who appreciate your art (I hope) and all of that wonderful energy you have inside of you is best placed into your own life, career, profession and happiness. When someone tries to gossip with you, don’t engage it. If someone asks you for the scoop, don’t give it. If you don’t want people to know something, don’t share it, and if someone lies about you, choose to address it or ignore it. Most importantly, keep living and working at your highest level and abide by your own value system. The truth cannot be whispered out of existence and if your talent, ethics, kindness and honesty are your truths, you’re safe.
Readers: Do you find that this is true in your area? How do you deal with this kind of behavior? Do you think it can ruin someone’s business?
