Dear Preston: I Am The Most Insecure Florist In This Business

Dear Preston:

I never feel confident. In spite of my success, I am always feeling a bit like a fraud who got lucky. I work hard and really give my all, but I just never feel like I deserve to be where I am. Do you have any advice for boosting my confidence or at least coming across more confident?

Dear Insecure:

The first thing I want to do is give you a hug and the next is to grab you by both arms and shake you just hard enough to get you out of your head and into a space where you recognize the difference between being a fraud and being a hungry artist. The first is usually made up of someone who doesn’t have much talent or care about much more than money and accolades whereas the second is what makes good artists great.

Insecure, we all feel this way at one point or another. We are so lucky to get to do what we love for a living and there is such pleasure in it that we can feel “lucky” (and we are) but it’s also important to recognize that we have value and work very hard in order to give our very best to clients we respect us and expect us to create incredible transformations for some of the most important moments of their lives. I suggest you spend a little time journaling and writing down not only what you love about your job, but what your clients love about what you do. Write down the risks you take and the ways in which you serve those around you. There’s a good chance you’ll start to see just how much effort you put into your work and how deserving you are to be where you are. You’re not just lucky, you’re good.
