I am considering starting my own ﬂoral business. Could you please tell me what the downfalls are, if any?
Dear Floral Entrepreneur:
If this is your passion then I got good news for you; there are no downfalls. However, from a business point of view, I have certainly learned quite a few painful lessons that I’ll love to share with you but worth it.
1 Try to create “your” personal ﬂoral style. Years ago I decided to go with “Over the top” as my style, and even though it’s not the right ﬁt for all; I still stick to it.
2 Keep in mind, to become an expert ﬂorist; you would need to invest the time. Floral design is like any other art, the more you do it, the better you’ll become.
3 Never badmouth a client, even if you do not like their taste. Always keep in mind that you are in the business of giving service. Your customers are your greatest assets, and please treat them like gold.
4 Make sure you always and I mean always pay your taxes on time. Trust me on this one, 20 years ago, almost went our of business for not paying my ﬂoral taxes.
5 If I were you, I would make sure not to start a business by offering or giving discounts (if you can avoid it). Once you start giving discounts, your future clients would always expect it.
6 Last but not lease, you could always get inspired by others, but NEVER and I mean NEVER follow trends on the market.
We are in the business of bringing clients dreams to life, can’t imagine anything more than fulﬁlling their dreams.
