To Be Innovative, You’ve Got To Be Open

Running a business in the event industry is one of the most exciting and rewarding things I have ever done. It also been challenging in ways that have taught me some some valuable lessons. Beyond pricing properly and being flexible and reasonable when managing teams and projects, I have learned that attitude can make or break you in this business. I am not just talking about putting on a smile when a client walks through the door, but how you wake up and greet your day, your projects, your colleagues and your team. By not paying attention to the way you come across, you can become your own worst enemy, setting up roadblocks and challenges where a different approach would have opened doors and revealed opportunities. Today, I want to share three ways to rethink the way you approach your day.
Think about what is possible. Unless you’re wishing to win the lottery every day, there are very few things that “cannot be done”. This is a defeatist attitude that keeps a lot of business owners and designers stuck in place when they could be moving forward. Whether it’s attracting clients in a higher market, partnering with another brand or mending a rift with a colleague, there’s usually a way to make it happen. Instead of walking into the office with the same negative feelings about what “cannot be done”, think of the things you want to achieve and brainstorm three ways you can work towards your goals.
Be OK with what you do not know. As much as we all would like to know everything, the reality is that there will be a lot of things you need to learn, regardless of where you are in your career. A good manager not only gives quality feedback, he or she asks for it. Instead of seeing what you do not know as a lack of knowledge, see your asking for information as a surplus of interest and curiosity. Not only will you gain access to insight, you’ll empower your team and make your clients feel heard.
Don’t get tripped up on unimportant things. In the grand scheme of things, it really doesn’t matter if someone gets annoyed or the internet goes down for 10 minutes. Infusing moments with unnecessary negativity is a waste of time and not productive. Set an intention for your day and observe what tries to distract you and choose to stay focused on your goals.
