Resolutions In Motion: Breaking Bad Habits

I want to thank you so much for your comments on the post yesterday. The great thing about New Years is that it gives us all a chance to start fresh and move forward as an even better version of ourselves. One of you asked what my personal goals were for 2013. I started to make my usual list, but then stopped. I realized in that moment that I needed to do something more than the typical rundown. I decided to think about how I would break my bad habits.
Now, before I go on, let me say that I am acutely aware that a good majority of the population makes resolutions around eating and living healthier. That said, I have a sweet tooth that goes beyond the average indulgence. Since childhood, I have been downright obsessed with eating sweets. I have been able to manage many of my other bad habits, but this one plagues me year-after-year. Another habit that seems to follow me from one year into the next is my incredible talent for wasting time. Whether watching movie-after-movie, terrible TV or doing my best to search my way to the end of the Internet, I am a master procrastinator. I started watching mindless television for the same reason as many of you might, I wanted to beat the stress of the workday. I am convinced sweets serve the same purpose. Nothing beats a helping of ice cream after a stressful day at work.
But after the third helping…
Time has shown me that it is often just as easy to start a good habit as it is a bad one, but breaking one that is holding you back sometimes proves a bit difficult. As a recovering addict, I have found that the best way for me to give up a bad habit is to actively replace it with a good one and to really think about what I am choosing to do while participating in it. Lastly, it always helps me to stick to my plan if I make it public. So, here I go.
In 2013, I will make a concerted effort to replace TV-watching with writing and to replace my beloved sweets with the pineapples and mango’s that I love. God, this one is hard.
OK, now it is your turn. I want to know what bad habit you want to break and what good habit you will engage instead. Our ability to succeed is measured greatly by our ability to adopt (and maintain) good, healthy habits.
