My Parents Told Me Event Design Is Too Risky And I Should Go To Medical School

Dear Preston:

I am about to graduate college and though my parents are telling me to go to medical school, the only thing I have ever wanted to be was an event designer. My parents know how much I love you and your work (and they do too) but they think you’re an outlier and it’s too much of a long shot. What do you think?

Want it so bad.

Dear Want It:

Far be it for me to say whether or not your parents are “right” or “wrong” in this scenario, but I will share something I know to be profoundly right on: there is nothing more rewarding than doing what you love for a living. Is it hard? Yes. Is it challenging? Absolutely. Will you fail? I guarantee it. Is it possible? 100%.  Want it, you have to go beyond desire and start working towards your goal.  What are you doing to make your dream your reality? How are you showing your parents that you not only have the talent, but the drive to make this happen? My suggestion is to say very little and do all you can. Start doing parties for friends, peers and local charities to gain experience. Take photos of all of your work, not only to share, but to learn. Always ask what you could have done differently. Take classes (you’re welcome to come to my PB Protege classes) and make a decision that this will be your path. Begin applying for assistant planning positions and reach out for informational interviews. Fill your life with possibility and information and I promise you that you will create your own opportunities.  I have a feeling that once your parents see that your movement, they will begin to see that success in this business is not about seeing your events in magazines, but seeing the grateful smiles of clients who trust you (and pay you). I wish you so much luck and hope you are bigger than I could ever hope to be someday.

Readers, what is your best advice? Were you discouraged to go into events as well?
