My Opinion: You Have To Create A Lot Of “Ugly” On Your Way To Success

The floral and event design business has become one of the most respected and growing businesses in the world. The reason for this is simple: florists, event designers, lighting designers, cake makers and caterers are all in the business of creating beauty. The only issue I see in our rapid-growing market is the desire of beginners to hit that “overnight success” status, well, overnight.
Last week, I had a very talented student of mine tell me that she started a year ago and has already designed her first $50,000 wedding. My student was wondering why she had not booked her first $100,000 event by now. She wanted to know what she was doing wrong.
I almost fell off of my chair.
I told her very candidly that it took me 10 years to get my first $50,000 wedding and she did it in two, yet she was still not happy. In my opinion, rapid growth can be very dangerous. It’s no wonder that 50% of people who start in this business give up within three years. If you are one of the fortunate folks who has managed to stick around a while, you know very well the importance of doing a lot of “ugly” designs before you find success.
This is one of the reasons I am so excited about my PB Protege class and why I teach so much of it myself. I want to give my students the proper tools to run a successful business (and help to give them the understanding that “overnight successes” do not happen overnight).
If you love what you do as much as I do, you will eventually learn that is not all about the money. It is more about creating designs that last a lifetime. In today’s blog, I would like you to give me your opinion:
