Kathy’s Blog: A Note To Vendors: Get Over Yourselves

I consider myself super lucky. I’ve been working with the best of the best in the wedding industry for a while now, and in that time, I am humbled to say that I been able to put together some truly spectacular creative teams. That said, I have also come across some huge personalities. Put frankly, when I take a closer look at most of the talented vendors and pay attention to how they operate, I am a bit disappointed to be greeted by a huge ego.
I am just going to say what most people think but never share; the fact that you are good does not mean your approach is always right, and more importantly, that you cannot be replaced. Too much experience is a great gift and can be your greatest strength, but it also lends itself to be your greatest weakness.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when I hire a very brilliant vendor who possesses amazing talent but then brings along with them a gigantic ego. What deception! There are some times when I just want to say, “Get over yourself, roll up your sleeves and get it done”. Let’s face it; this is the service industry. We need to understand that our client’s request (as absurd as it may seem to us) it’s important to them.
I say this with humility to all in the industry: If you consider yourself “la crème del la crème” train yourself to listen closely to what matters to your client. Forget about your ego. Ego demands that you pay attention to yourself first and does not allow you to provide service in a natural manner.
I love when my vendors are great listeners; this automatically tells me that they get it! Remember our clients value the luxury we provide and not the one we assume.
