Dear Preston: There Is Too Much Competition And I Want To Give Up

Dear Preston:

I have been a planner for 15 years and I still feel so lost. My motivation is beginning to diminish; there is way too much competition out there. How do you get a bride to hire you and not someone else?

Dear Frustrated:

I am sure that you are not the only one feeling this way. After being in the event business for 35 years, I have learned and accepted that is fear is a normal part of the growing process. You must try to embrace your fear and frustration and know that it is a part of the business.

That said, here are a few tricks that I have learned over the years when it comes to being hired by brides.

Know who your bride needs you to be. In my experience, there are two kinds of brides in this business: First, there is the bride who has her own vision and has planned her wedding down to the smallest detail. Second, there is the bride who needs total guidance. As a professional, it is essential that you know how to address and support both.

You need to provide value in every single conversation that you have with your bride. You do this by giving them as much free advice as you can. It is a mistake to think you must keep everything a secret. Generosity can go a long way.

Most brides value experience. Your bride needs to know that you bring 15 solid years of experience to the table within the first ten minutes of meeting you. You might want to explain to her the difference between hiring an experienced planner and one who is just starting out. Share with her what your experience has taught you and how it can benefit her.

Success is a choice, frustrated. You have to believe that you have a God-given right to be successful as all of us do.

Question: Please help the planner above. Can you share what motivates you to keep going without giving up?
