Dear Preston: My Planner Needs To Pay Off My Credit Card Bills!

My question is in regards to budget. I just got married and my husband and I paid for our own wedding. When we hired our planner, we were very clear about our budget and she told us that it was possible. However, after the wedding, we added up our expenses and realized that we spent twice as much under her advisement. I am getting all of my credit card bills and can hardly afford to pay them off. I hold the planner responsible. What should I do?
Please allow me tell you a story: I had a client who came in and told me that she too had a specific budget. I told her that I thought it was a good one. Later, I proceeded to ask her what was the vision for her wedding. As you know, we are known for floral designs that are a bit over-the-top. What this client wanted was way, way over-the-top. Guess what? This doubled her budget. I think what the planner likely did, was tell you that she can work within your budget before asking you exactly what you wanted. Unfortunately, most clients do not have a clue as to what things actually cost in the event world.
I do have to ask you a question: Did the planner make you aware that you were over budget? In my experience, most planners create a written budget before the event for your approval. If this is the case, I have to ask why are you so surprised?
I am sorry for being so blunt, but I am sure you also wanted a perfect wedding. I don’t think you can now hold the planner responsible. I think you are very much responsible for managing your own money and saying, ‘No, I do not want to spend that much” before your wedding and not after.
