Dear Preston,

How important it is for designers to continue mentoring newer people entering into the event design or floral business to help produce true professionals in our field?

Dear Troy:

I hate to say this, but I think true professionals are becoming a dying art in our field. I believe there are tons of people that are joining, with the hope of making it overnight; when in reality, it takes a lot of time, effort, and patience to survive in this industry.

The problem with this industry is that we never know when we are going to have an excellent year or a terrible year. For that reason, many designers give up way too soon who can’t handle the uncertainty that each day brings in.

For instance, I have been in the business for over 36 years, and I have had some successful years and some very horrible ones. I compel myself to keep reinventing PB brand to address the issue of uncertainty.

In my opinion, anyone who is in the event business for more than ten years must consider becoming a mentor to their peers. I love the saying by Margaret Fuller, “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it.”

I would say, this is one of the reasons that I started the PB Protege program. I think there is tons of knowledge that I acquired over the years figuring out on my own by wasting time and money, which I always wish that I knew when I started.

I firmly believe, giving back could be a powerful tool for continuous self-growth and building credibility. So for any of you, that would like to raise the bar for themselves, then make sure to consider becoming a mentor.

I certainly have quite a few myself who I would love to have as a mentor. Among all, I’ll like interior designer and architect, David Rockwell, who I think is a genius. And another gentleman who is also one of my brilliant client, Mr. Steve Wynn. I am always amazed by Mr. Wynn’s understanding when it comes to the art of combining design and excellent service.

Dear Readers:

Is there someone that you’ll like to be mentored by and why?
