Dear Preston: Are Bridal Shows Worth It?

I need your advice. I have been in the floral business for a little over a year and I am having a difficult time getting new clients. There is a bridal show in my town. It’s not cheap, but I am considering it in order to get a booth. Do you think this is a good idea?
I have been very fortunate to be a keynote speaker for a number of bridal shows so I can safely respond having a bit of experience in this area. I personally think some of these shows are a great way to gain exposure, but I would like to suggest a few things to keep in mind before you join.
Look At Their History: Bridal shows come and go so it is essential to be sure you are joining one that has been around for a good amount of time (at least three years). It takes a great deal of experience to run a successful bridal show and you don’t want to join one that is disorganized.
Is It Worth The Investment? Find out how many brides or potential clients will be attending the show. This is very important as I have been to many shows that offered access to very few potential clients. Make sure the show is being promoted properly as this is an essential component of success in this area.
Do The Work: You need to be prepared to create a show stopping statement piece. Most bridal shows have a ton of booths and it’s easy to get lost in the mix. If you are a florist, you need to create that one visually dramatic statement that will attract viewers and make them want to stop.
Do Your Research: Last but not least, you might want to consider interviewing other vendors who have done the show in years prior. That’s usually a good way to learn if it’s a good investment.
All in all, I think this could be a great way for you to gain exposure. Also, it is important to keep in mind that it is a great way to get your name out there, even if you do not gain any direct clients from it.
