Cake Pricing

 

Dear Readers,

I don’t know about all of you, but I have quite a sweet tooth,  In fact, If I could, I would always have my desserts before my meal.  Wait, I sometimes do…

Well, it just so happens that one of my best friends happens to be the cake goddess, Sylvia Weinstock.  Sylvia and I go way back, and she is without question a pioneer of the industry.

Recently, I met Darren DiPietro, another brilliant cake maker.  Darren was kind enough to commend me on giving what he believed to be sound advice for planners, florists and other industry professionals, but never cake makers.
Thanks to dozens of TV food shows, cake design is being propelled to its zenith, but there is hardly ever any discussion of cost.  Most clients have no clue as to to the many hours it takes for skilled artisans to create masterpieces that are both beautiful and delicious. It’s no wonder they are often shocked at the prices.  As a designer, I know that while cakes are just one part of the event, they often help set the tone.

I have done my research and have learned quite a bit about cakes and pricing.  Most prices are influenced by the quality and the amount of time spent working on each cake.

Today, I would like to show you one of Darren DiPietro’s cake to test whether or not you have an idea of what a cake actually costs.
As most cakes are priced “per-person”, I’d like to know if you think the cake above is:
A   $3.00 per person
B   $5.00 per person
C   $10.00 per person
D   None of the above.
