Are You A Hero Or A Victim?

I’ve been traveling a lot lately speaking at several different conferences. I truly love spending time with so many wedding and event vendors and new friends when I’m on the road, and I’m touched by the stories folks share with me.
There are typically two types of people I meet and two types of stories I hear: Either folks have a hero mentality when it comes to their business or they see themselves as the victim.
Those with a victim mentality usually say something like, “No matter what I do, I can’t seem to get any of the good jobs. I’m much more talented that my competitors are, but I’m a minority, and so I can’t get ahead.”
Those with the hero mentality, on the other hand, will tell me that even though they aren’t getting any of the good jobs, it’s okay, because they know that someday they will make it. They tell me that they are confident, because they love what they do. They believe it is only a matter of time and that being a minority might actually be their greatest asset.
My business journey has been a long and winding road. Sometimes, I’ve played the victim, but I’ve tried to play the hero a lot more often. It’s easy to slip into the victim mentality, which is why I try to keep the qualities of a hero in mind: Heroes have courage and fortitude. They endure. They have considerable patience.
Remember, you’re the protagonist of your own business story; you’re writing this tale. Wouldn’t you rather be a hero than a victim?
